HUSTLIN' SHAKESPEARE

“was ever woman in this humour woo’d?”

Hustlin’ Shakespeare is a ‘new’ Shakespeare play from Theaterworks Amsterdam.  Borrowing excerpts from a variety of the Bard’s works, we present them in a whole new light – disco light, that is…

Yes, Shakespeare’s classic characters have learned some new moves, from the Salsa to the Hustle, and tonight Petruchio will have to defend his turf – and his woman – from the grasping clutches of the ambitious and nimble-footed Richard III.  And while Katherina is swaying between the two, Ann just wants to have fun, and Romeo just wants Juliet – who just wants Petruchio, who just wants Katherina.  And who knows what Katherina wants?  You will, by the end of this wild ride through Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies and sonnets.

With its combination of classical text, contemporary music and dance, and non-traditional location, Hustlin’ Shakespeare will delight young and old, students and Shakespeare fans – and all those simply looking for an unusual night out.

Visitors will recognise some familiar faces from previous Theaterworks productions:  Alfred van der Poll (Petruchio) was most recently seen in the Staged Reading of Doubt, and shone as Reverend Parris in last season’s ‘The Crucible’.  He is joined on stage by Theaterworks’ Artistic Director Donna DuCarme in the role of Kate, and Theaterworks regulars Joost van Oosterhout (Romeo), Saskia van Engeland (Juliet), Don Sesia (Richard), and Esther Daems (Ann).  Direction is by Victoria Pope and Nina Cohen.  Joining the team is also New York actress/teacher/producer Kay Durlacher-Rothman, who will coach the performers in classic “1st Folio” Shakespearean technique.  Music design will be by Pilo Pilkes.

DuCarme, Pope, Pilkes and Rothman are all part of the original team who developed the workshop version of Hustlin’ Shakespeare (then titled “Lovin’ Shakespeare”) at Theater de Cameleon in 2002, and this production is the first of many projects in development by the company.  “The Monster Within” by Donna DuCarme, is scheduled for spring 2007, and an English-language adaptation of “Angst & Ellende in het Rijk van Kok”, by Guus Vleugel and Ton Vorstenbosch, is in development for the 2007/2008 season.  All these projects are examples of Theaterworks Amsterdam’s long-term commitment to presenting professional-quality English Language theater to Holland’s intercultural citizens and visitors.
